The Traveling Canucks, Nicole and Cameron, just nominated me to participate in a fun new meme that showcases 7 of my favorite travel photos, as determined by the categories listed below. In the past month I had lots of fun putting together the Best of StruxTravel 2011 and The ABCs of StruxTravel, so I was excited for another opportunity to share some of my favorites.
So here they are, 7 Super Shots from my travels:
1. A photo that… takes my breath away
Nestled between the rugged foothills of the Alps and the deep, cerulean waters of Lake Como lies the comune of Varenna, Italy. I never thought I’d see a place so beautiful, outside of my dreams. It was an overcast day when I took this photo so the earth-toned buildings—in various shades of ochre, umber, cinnamon and saffron—really “popped” against the green backdrop of the mountains and lake.
2. A photo that… makes me laugh or smile
While walking along a nature path on the Dalmatian island of Hvar, Croatia I spotted this strange sign. Thank goodness I saw it when I did. I was this close to pushing over a brick wall or tipping over a washing machine (with a giant turkey leg on top!)
3. A photo that… makes me dream
I think everyone likes to take photos from the airplane window when they travel. I love the clouds, the blue of the sky and how the diffused light creates an ethereal beauty in this shot. It’s like a voyage through the heavens. To me it represents The Unknown of where this plane may take me.
4. A photo that… makes me think
Photos like this one of Arizona’s Grand Canyon make me think about how small I am in the grand scheme of things. Sometimes we forget how beautiful and majestic nature can be. Standing on the South Rim of the canyon, looking out into what seems like infinite space, really helps you appreciate the grandeur of planet Earth.
5. A photo that… makes my mouth water
This was taken at Galitos Grill in the Ipanema neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I know it only looks like a couple of plates of chicken and a salad. What you can’t tell by this picture is that this chicken is actually the best in the entire world (if not the universe!) We must have eaten there three times on our trip, it was that delicious. Plus, those caipirinhas definitely knocked our socks off!
6. A photo that… tells a story
Parked on a side street in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, this broken-down, antique car must have been there for a reason. What story do you think it tells? Why is it there? Why are there plants growing inside of it? I thought it was interesting subject matter for a photo.
7. A photo that… I am most proud of (aka My National Geographic shot)
I think this is my favorite photo, and I took it in one of my favorite cities—Granada, Spain. Photographed through a Moorish archway at the Generalife gardens, it shows the Alhambra palace glowing in the golden light of sunset. Every time I see this picture I dream of returning to one of the most spectacular places in the world.
