With the year rapidly drawing to a close, I figured it would be a perfect time to share some of my favorite travel moments from 2011. Jeremy at Budget Travel Adventures came up with the idea for a “Best of” post and thanks to Ben from Adventures With Ben for nominating me to participate in this year-end round-up. So, without further ado, here are my answers to this year’s questions:
I did a fair amount of domestic traveling this year (mostly in my home state of California) but it worked out perfectly that I’m wrapping up the year in my favorite U.S. city—Miami Beach, Florida. To me, everything about Miami is perfect. It’s late December and it’s 80 degrees outside! How amazing is that? I’ll be posting several stories in January about my experiences here, but in the meantime here’s a link to the Top 10 things to do in South Beach.
Best Travel Experience 2011
My best travel experience this year was spending a week with my family at a luxurious beach house in La Jolla, California. This time under one roof with everybody was simply awesome. I think my most memorable moment was teaching my two-year-old nephew how to fly his Buzz Lightyear kite on the beach.
Best International Destination 2011
Sadly, for the first time in a decade I didn’t leave U.S. soil this year. Fortunately, I did a lot of international travel last year so had plenty of material for my travel blog. I was really hoping to make it to Cuba in 2011, but one thing led to another and unfortunately it did not happen. I hereby proclaim 2012 to be the year of international travel!
Worst Travel Experience 2011
I’m happy to report that I had no bad travel experiences this year… which is perfectly fine with me. Last year I missed two international flights (at great expense) so I think I was due for some stress-free travel.
Most Embarrassing Travel Moment 2011
Hmmm… I can’t think of anything embarrassing that’s happened to me this year. Only five hours remain in 2011 so I better embarrass myself fast! Maybe streak down Lincoln Road?
Best Local Destination 2011
I’d have to say my favorite local destination was Catalina Island. I was born and raised in Southern California so it’s unbelievable that I’d never been there until this year. I’ve been to five continents and to islands all over the world—from Hawaii to Hong Kong and the Azores to the Cyclades—yet never to an island that’s only twenty-two miles from Los Angeles. I was able to spend my birthday weekend with some of my best friends so it really was perfect!
Best Travel Lesson from 2011
Although I didn’t do nearly as much traveling this year as I’d hoped, I still learned a lot. I think I really came into my own with my blogging and “met” many others just like me whose passion for travel has really inspired me to continue writing and to see more of the world. I wish everyone a very happy, prosperous and travel-filled 2012!
Now, I’m nominating the following bloggers to share their Best of Travel for 2011:
