Where in the World am I? (#2)

Jeremy at Budget Travel Adventures started a fun new series on Wednesdays called “Where in the world am I?” where he posts a mystery photo and asks his readers to guess where it was taken. He’s invited other travel bloggers to take part as well, so here’s my entry for this week!

Last week’s photo was clearly way too easy since everyone got it right. So, as promised, this week is going to be a bit more challenging. Here are some clues about this city:  (1) It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; (2) I visited on the 475th anniversary of its founding (purely by coincidence); and (3) Pope John Paul II visited the building shown in this photograph in 1991. Any guesses?

One winner will be selected among those who answered correctly and will be featured on next week’s “Where in the world am I?” post, on my Facebook fan page, and on Twitter with his/her name, blog, twitter, along with a brief bio! If you aren’t a part of any of these, you can still share your answers on Facebook or in the comments to be recognized!

The answer & winner for this week’s “Where in the world am I?”

…And we have a winner! (drumroll, please) Cathy Sweeney of Traveling With Sweeney guessed the correct answer of Angra do Heroísmo (on the Azorean island of Terceira), Portugal! Together with Ponta Delgada (on Sao Miguel Island) and Horta (on Faial Island), Angra is one of the three regional capitals of the Azores. Each capital is responsible for one of the three branches of government; Angra is the location of the judicial branch (i.e.: The Supreme Court of the Azores.) The city’s name translates to “cove of heroism” in Portuguese. I took this photo in front of the historic Sé Cathedral while on vacation with my Dad two years ago. Thanks to everyone for playing!

Cathy lives in the San Francisco Bay Area where she writes the popular travel blog, Traveling With Sweeney. Based on a lifelong passion for travel, she enjoys sharing her perspectives on places, people, food and entertainment! Be sure to follow  her on Facebook at Twitter too!

I’m looking forward to doing this again next week!

Here was last week’s photo, correctly identified by everyone as Firenze (Florence), Italy. Jeremy Branham, from Budget Travel Adventures, was the first to answer correctly. I also gave credit to Jenna Francisco from This Is My Happiness since she was the first to give the most complete answer of the Piazza della Repubblica.
