I can’t believe how fast time flies! 2012 has come and gone and we’re already a week into 2013. Looking back, the past year was a great one for me. I took a trip of a lifetime, fulfilled a life-long travel dream, visited a tropical island, and expanded the StruxTravel brand. It can’t get much better than that. I figured now would be a great time to sum up my year in travel by answering some questions like I did at the end of last year. I wish everyone a very happy, prosperous and (of course) travel-filled 2013!
Best Domestic Travel Destination 2012
For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to drive cross-country from California to the East Coast. Over Thanksgiving week, I was finally able to take part in my so-called Epic Road Trip. It took us eight days to cross through eight states. It really was an experience of a lifetime. If I had to choose my favorite stop along the way, I’d pick San Antonio, Texas. I’ll be writing more about this beautiful, exciting city soon so stay tuned.
Best International Destination 2012
This one’s easy. It was undoubtedly Machu Picchu, Peru. Visiting this “Lost City of the Incas” has been near the top of my Bucket List for a very long time. It was everything I expected, and so much more. I loved all of the stops on my Peruvian adventure including Lima, Cuzco, the Sacred Valley and Lake Titicaca, but actually discovering Machu Picchu for myself was an experience beyond words.
Best Local Destination 2012
I think my favorite “local” destination that I visited last year would be San Luis Obispo, located on California’s picturesque central coast about three hours north of Los Angeles. San Luis Obispo is a city that I’d passed through a number of times before, but never took the time to stop and look around. What I discovered was a bohemian, vibrant, and naturally beautiful destination. I stayed at the iconic Madonna Inn, visited several of the city’s eclectic shops, and even checked out some of the quirky sights.
Once again, I’m happy to report that I had no bad travel experiences this year, which is perfectly fine by me.
Best Overall Travel Experience 2012
I have to answer this one by saying Peru again. I traveled with my sister for the first time since 1998, when she graduated college and we backpacked across Europe. Although it was very hard for her to be away from her children, we had a fantastic time together. I hope to share another experience like this again with her someday.
Best Travel Lesson from 2012
The more I travel (and write about traveling), the more I am discovering that this is my real passion in life. This past year, I fulfilled another dream of mine by becoming an accredited travel agent. So now, in addition to my blog, I can help share the joy of travel with others by booking memorable vacations and selling travel insurance too. I can’t wait to see what adventures 2013 will bring me!
Now, I’m nominating the following bloggers to share their Best of Travel for 2012. I invite each of you to pose these questions to other travel bloggers too!
