It was an unseasonably cold and rainy Saturday morning but I made a forty-five minute trek to the quaint bedroom community of Montrose, located in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains just north of Los Angeles. The reason for my sojourn was a seminar at Montrose Travel, one of the top 50 travel agencies in the United States as well as an industry leader for hosting home-based travel agents.
It’s no surprise that in the past couple of decades, brick-and-mortar travel agencies have been closing at a breakneck pace. Gone are the days of a travel agency on every block. With the advent of the Internet and sites like Expedia, Orbitz and Travelocity, many people have felt at ease making their own travel arrangements. However, although you might feel comfortable booking a round-trip flight or a hotel room for a couple nights on your own, would you want to buy a Caribbean cruise for your family or a multi-city tour across Europe without professional assistance? There’s still a real need for educated and experienced travel agents to plan leisure, corporate and group trips. One type of travel agent that’s grown in popularity in recent years is the home-based agent. This person has the luxury of working from practically anywhere and is able to save on the costs of overhead.
Andi Mysza, one of the co-owners of Montrose Travel, spoke to a group of about twenty-five students from the Travel & Hospitality program at West Los Angeles College about the pros and cons of affiliating with a host agency. Her presentation was very thorough and informative and excited me about prospects for my future in the travel business.
As you may have noticed on my “About” page, one of my goals is to start my own web-based travel agency in the near future. More than likely, I will affiliate with Montrose Travel. Their connections, preferred supplier relationships, instant buying power, access to global distribution systems and many other perks make them a perfect fit for me to expand the StruxTravel brand.
