Adoquines in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

While walking through historic Old San Juan, Puerto Rico I came across these fascinating blue glazed cobblestone streets. They were like nothing I’d ever seen before. Our guide explained that they’re called adoquines and were laid back in the 16th and 17th centuries. Cast in Spain from the slag of iron furnaces, the  conquistadores would bring boatloads of these bricks to the Americas as ballast in their empty galleons. Then, they would dump the bricks in Puerto Rico and load the ships up with gold and silver plunder from the New World for the trip back home.
