Today I’m starting a new recurring post called “Perspectives” where I’ll show a video from my point of view (POV) of things I’ve done or come across during my travels. Ever since I was a kid I dreamed of someday riding on an airboat in the Florida Everglades, and last summer I finally had the opportunity. Speeding through the grassy marshland on a boat propelled by a giant fan, was a really thrilling experience. You’re actually gliding along the surface of the water, which is at times only six inches deep. Everglades National Park is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States and has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, as well. It’s actually a very shallow, slow moving river that flows through miles of sawgrass, cypress swamps, and mangroves until it empties into Florida Bay. During the tour we saw a few alligators and several species of native birds such as ibises, egrets, and blue herons. From this video you can get a sense of what it was like for yourself!
