This Friday through Sunday, January 14th – 16th is the 35th annual Art Deco Weekend in Miami Beach, Florida. Celebrating the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the entire world, it’s estimated that a half million people will converge upon Ocean Drive to take part in the festivities.
The parade begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday and features Miami Beach personality Elaine Lancaster as the Grand Marshal. Dog owners are encouraged to dress up their pets (and themselves) in glamorous and outrageous costumes and take part in The “Arf Deco” Dog Parade as well. [Meet at 10:30 a.m. at Lummis Park, at 6th Street and Ocean Drive.]
The festival will feature numerous booths selling food, antiques, memorabilia, and arts & crafts. Throughout the weekend there will be plenty of live entertainment, jazz, reggae, and R&B performances too. Plus, as always, the Miami Design Preservation League will lead historic walking tours highlighting the extravagant, pastel-colored architecture that became so popular between 1923 and 1943.
Another attraction is the Art Deco Classic Car Fest, featuring classic automobiles from this bygone era. The South Florida Antique Automobile Club of America will award trophies for best Pre-War and Post-War autos. All classic cars are eligible to be judged and are encouraged to participate.
